Mammoth Cave Railroad Bike & Hike Trail – Kentucky

This ride was part of our Fall 2010 trip.

This is a crushed rock trail that runs from Park City to Mammoth Cave National Park. It follows the route of the old Mammoth Cave Railroad. Very little of the trail is on the old railroad bed though. It’s a fun ride through the forest with quite a few short (some steep) climbs, twists and turns. The trail is 9 miles long. We parked at the Dollar General store in Park City and rode up Mammoth Cave Parkway (Highway 255) to the beginning of the trail which is just on the other side of highway 65. Not having time to tour Mammoth Cave we only visited the historic old entrance. It was raining when we started but the rain stopped soon in to the ride. Our timing was great as the trees were turning and made a colorful display. We rode about 40 miles total. There are signs along the trail explaining the area and railroad’s history.
