A Tale Of Too Many Bikes

As I often do I’ve let the number of bikes we currently have ready to ride, exceed an amount that will fit in the garage while still allowing room for the truck and us to maneuver around. My goal this week was to correct that problem. Nova and I each agreed to go down one bike. Monday after much thought I finally decide on a bike to pull out of active duty. I break it down and stash the frame and wheels in the attic above the garage and the other parts in bins and on the pegboard in the garage as I do. While disassembling the bike Nova chose, I found myself altering it instead to my suit my tastes and the next thing I know I’m out for a ride on my new-to-me bike.

Tuesday it’s raining and I’m bored and I find myself dragging a frame down from the attic and building it up. I can’t get ahead. While having so many bikes with not a lot of room to store them is a problem, I just can’t imagine only having one or two. I believe having many different bikes helps to keep me motivated to ride and tinkering with them keeps me busy when I’m not riding.

What I built up Tuesday was this Schwinn straight bar frame with the fork and strut off of other Schwinns, mismatched red wheels, street tread tires with cracked sidewalls (probably from being stored in the hot attic), a Brooks saddle and other misc. parts. The fender I found on the road and I’m guessing was a motorcycle exhaust heat shield.

This morning I’m reluctantly tearing down Nova’s bike turned my bike.

    1. Yes it is. I generally sell a bike or 2 at our annual swap meet but of course I may bring one home from the swap or find something else during the year. I do have at least 3 I’m planning to get rid of (one of which is our tandem) at next years swap in the spring. I could try and sell them sooner but I like to do it at the swap to support it. I have scaled way back though from what we once had when I was renting a storage unit to house them.
