Riding And Breweries In The Salt City

This past Saturday we trucked the bikes to the nearby town of Hutchinson, KS which is about an hours drive from home. Hutchinson is also known as the Salt City due to the underground salt mine there which is one of the world’s largest deposits of rock salt. We rode the Jim Martinez Sunflower Trail, cruised around town including the state fairgrounds, ate lunch and checked out the 2 breweries.

We started our ride in the city of South Hutchinson which is just across the Arkansas River from Hutchinson. We’d never explored it before. It’s home to a Tyson Foods and Morton Salt plant. We then rode across the river and made our way to El Potrillo which is our go-to restaurant when in town. After lunch we made our way on to the fairgrounds. It was interesting seeing the fairgrounds when it wasn’t packed with people. Next we rode to the city’s 2 breweries, Salt City and Sandhills. We liked all of the beers we sampled at both of them. Both offered small pours which is nice. Salt City had a lot of neat Hutchinson history on their walls but overall the atmosphere was nicer at Sandhills. After the breweries we explored the city some more until dark, returned to our truck, loaded the bikes up and headed home. Was a great day.
