Riding The Red Bud

The Red Bud Trail is a future rail-to-trail between the towns of Wichita and Augusta, KS with the town of Andover in-between. It is currently unimproved and nearly impossible to ride, unless… you have a fatbike like my Mongoose Beast. I got on the trail in Wichita at Oliver street and rode to Santa Fe Lake rode near Augusta which was about 15 miles. The old railroad bed between Wichita and Andover is pretty decent but it declines in Andover and worsens the farther you go East. Bigger rocks, limb piles, debris and missing culverts and bridges. At one point a mile section has been fenced off by a private party so I detoured around it on the county roads. Just East of Santa Fe lake Road there were more limb piles and fences blocking the trail so I ended my ride there. Running short on time and with dark clouds back to the West, I decided to call my parents who graciously agreed to bring me my vehicle instead of me riding back. It was an enjoyable ride and the bike handled the rough ballast surface well.

This will be a great trail and asset to the area if and when it’s completed.
