High Trestle Trail – Iowa

The High Trestle Trail is a 25 mile paved trail between the towns of Ankeny and Woodward Iowa. The trail is known for its 13-stories high and nearly half mile long bridge over the Des Moines River. We stayed in Ankeny and on our first night drove to the Woodward trail head and rode the 3 miles out to the bridge to see it lit up at night. The next morning we drove back to the Woodward trail head and rode the entire trail out and back for a total of 53 miles. The bridge is really something to see and experience but even without the bridge the trail could stand on its own. Paved the entire way (even when it crosses gravel roads). nice scenery, small towns along the trail and its not straight. Even though we stayed in Ankeny we chose to start in Woodward to ride in to the 20+ mph wind in the beginning and have it easier coming back. Despite the wind it was a great ride. On the way back we stopped at the Flat Tire Lounge in Madrid for refreshments.
This was part of our May 2012 Trip.
