Hawthorne 3 Speed

Today was City-Wide Clean Up day and we spotted this thrown out to the curb while on a bike ride last night. Not for sure what I’ll do with this. These diamond frame 3 speed types were never my favorites. I’ve cut up and stripped several Raleighs and Schwinns of this type and have the Racer that I never ride but there’s something about this one I like. I think it’s the black and white, the chainguard and the grip shifter.

  1. Saw this post from 2009. I have this bike and am struggling with the three speed rear hub shifter.

It’s mostly not functional- which would be fine since it could essentially be a single speed, but instead of just staying in gear the chain will pop off and get locked next to the hub.

    Any advice?

    1. I’ve always been lucky I guess and gotten these 3 speed hubs to work by just adjusting the cable. As for the chain coming off the only possible causes I can think of are a worn chain or worn sprockets front or rear or bent front sprocket. I suppose chain misalignment too but I can’t see that being the case on this bike unless the frame is tweaked. Sorry I’m no more help. Good luck with it.
