Route Of The Olympian – Montana

The next ride on our trip was the Route Of The Olympian. This rail-to-trail is on the same railbed as the Route Of The Hiawatha but on the Montana side. We rode from our hotel in Haugen up to the Route Of The Hiawatha trail head at the top. This section of the trail had 2 trestles, 1 tunnel and some good scenery although not quite as grand as the Hiawatha. It was a Saturday and we only encountered one other person on the trail, a gentleman who occasionally comes over from Spokane to ride it.

Once at the top we hung out for a while having a snack and watching all the people starting their downhill ride on the Hiawatha. We spoke to the shuttle driver we had met at the bottom the previous day. He was now busy airing up tires for people who evidently didn’t think to check them till they got on their bikes to ride. We watched a Daughter trying to reteach her Mother who hadn’t been on a bike in 50 years to ride on a rental bike. After our snack and people watching we returned to our quiet, empty trail and rode back to the bottom where we stopped in at the 50,000 Silver $ Saloon which was right next door to our hotel.
