Grocery Getter Update

Well over a year ago, and I quote myself… “Mostly out of boredom I decided to chop up an old Roadmaster MTB and turn it in to a cargo bike akin to a Cycle Truck with a large front rack or basket mounted to the frame.” Since then I never really come up with a solution for mounting a front rack or basket. I did for a time, strap a plastic basket to the headtube as a temporary solution. A couple of days a go I tried to devise a better solution. What I ended up with was a handlebar stem u-bolted to the head tube which is holding an old handlebar I modified to be used as a rack. I zip tied the plastic basket to the rack.

Please ignore my welds.

I like being able to remove the rack and even the mount.

Underside of rack setup.

I took it out shopping yesterday.

Shopping at the thrift store.

I bought a few things. This setup worked pretty good although nothing I purchased was very heavy.

The doll was found in the road. I took it home to dispose of properly. I don’t own a record player. You’ll see why I purchased these in another post.

Today I hauled a fairly heavy and large crockpot to my parents with no issues.

Large crockpot barely fit in basket.

If I stick with this setup I should figure out a way to use 2 u-bolts to attach the modified stem. Another option is to weld a metal stem (this one is aluminum) directly to the head tube. I’d also modify the rack or make a new one. Odds are though I’ll use it just the way it is till it fails.

It’s a fun bike to ride but is so sluggish. I don’t know what I was thinking when I took it to Colorado last year. I like that it’s mostly built from parts that were destined for the trash including the frame and basket.
