Driver of the Week

Ryan McAnninch is a third generation driver. So when he first started
racing go-carts at the age of five, it was not a surprise to his
family. He raced go-carts until he was about seven years of age.
McAnninch
decided to do some wrestling for a while, then when he was about 17, he
and a friend built a street stock. He raced in the street stock
division for about two years, then went to the Late Model division.
His first year in the Late Model division, McAnninch won the NCRA Late Model Rookie of the year.
McAnninch now races in both the Late Model division and Modified division. He is Late Model point’s leader right now.
McAnninch
has raced in the Topless Outlaw Racing Association. During his first
year, he finished fourth in points, and in his second year, he finished
third in points.
“I don’t have a preference for which car I drive. It is like asking a parent which child they love more,” said McAnninch.
McAnninch is a wrestling coach for Wichita Independent and owns his own painting company.
In
February, McAnninch saw something about the Racin’ for a Livin’ contest
and reality show. McAnninch entered and received an eight-page resume
to fill out. The company then picks the top 21 rookies out of 3,600,
and then they have to promote themselves to get the votes of fans. The
top five rookies will go to Charlotte, North Carolina, for ten weeks to
be on the reality show and compete for a chance to win a ride in a
Busch Car Series for 2007 sponsored by VISA.
Right now McAnninch sits in the top five. Of course, that can change on a weekly basis. The voting ends on August 15.
McAnninch is the only driver representing Kansas. Anybody can vote and can vote as often as possible.
So let’s help Ryan McAnninch make a dream come true go to www.racinforalivin.com (wildcard) and vote.

Mike Woodruff

Mike Woodruff in front of his midget car

Last week, I talked about Mike Woodruff, well-known Sprint Car driver. Woodruff was burnt by pouring Methanol on a bonfire.
According to family members, Woodruff’s daughter Makayla put the fire out on her dad.
Woodruff is still in very serious condition, and they have already started skin grafts.
On
July 1, AJ Selenke made an announcement at 81 Speedway that for that
night only, he would sell his t-shirts for $10 each, and all proceeds
would go to the Woodruff fund, but, on top of that, Selenke and Parker
Oil would match everything they sold that night. By the end of the
night they contributed $2,728 to the Woodruff fund.
Alternative Pest Management is working with 81 Speedway and going to be doing a fundraiser for Woodruff, also.
If
you would like to contribute to Mike Woodruff, you can by sending any
donations to Mike Woodruff Medical Fund C/O Centera Bank, PO Box 400
Sublette, KS 67877.

Dr. Rey grew up in Haysville and graduated from Campus High School.
Eventually, Rey became a high school history teacher in Andover.
Seeing what a neighbor went through with a hip replacement, Rey wanted to do something to help people.
Rey went to Medical School at Kansas University and just finished at Wesley Family Practice.
“After the end of my first year of residency I changed from emergency room to family practice,” said Dr. Rey.
In looking for a place to practice and call home, Dr. Rey interviewed all over the country. “But choosing a place was not an easy decision, but I felt like the Family Med Center Group was a great opportunity for me,” said Dr. Rey.
Dr. Rey’s family also lives in the area.
The Family Med Center Group as a whole is committed to Haysville and offering top notch Medical care in Haysville.
Dr. Rey feels that since he is fresh out of Medical School and residency, he is full of energy and excited about coming home to Haysville to practice.
“I want to be able to teach people about medicine and their health,” said Dr. Rey.
Dr. Rey has been married for 16 years to his high school sweetheart Donelle. They have two kids: four-year-old Hunter and one-year-old Abigail.
Dr. Rey likes to spend time with his family. He also likes to travel, exercise, and hike in the mountains.
The new doctor will be taking care of newborns to adults. He will not be doing any ob care.
The Haysville Family Med Center has an x-ray and lab facility here in Haysville. The main location in Derby has a new ambulatory surgery center. They also have the capabilities to do Ultra Sound, MRI, and CT scans in Derby. As a patient of Family Med Center, you wouldn’t have to go to Wichita for tests unless it involved an overnight stay.
Dr. Rey is looking forward to working with Haysville residents and providing state of the art medical care to Haysville.

Mystery of a Schoolhouse

By Mimi Morris
The Haysville Times

A one-room school house in Ohio Township built in 1875 offered professional educators a place in which to teach and, until 1943, provided education to students in District 64 of Sedgwick County. This was the Richmond Hill School, which eventually took on a new life for the entire township as a community gathering spot, as an election voting booth, and a meeting place and for day and evening church services.

City Votes on Trash Franchising

By Joni Lee
The Haysville Times

A plan for improving the city of Haysville has been set into motion following the city council members’ approval of the internal improvements petition on Monday night. Included in the petition are plans to improve the sanitary sewer system, water supply, water, streets, and storm water drainage for the Timber Creek Estates Addition. These renovations symbolize the community’s ongoing commitment to preserve and rejuvenate the city of Haysville.
An issue addressed at the meeting that many residents were concerned about was the proposal for trash hauling. The council members discussed whether to gather more data concerning the four trash companies that had made proposals or to go ahead with a vote. They decided to put the issue to a vote, with a unanimous decision not to accept the proposal to franchise with Lies Trash Service, Waste Connections of Kansas, Stutzman Refuse Disposal, or Waste Management. However, Mayor Armstrong encouraged citizens to call their waste removal provider on an individual basis to try and get the proposed lower fee for trash hauling. Board member Steven Crum also urged city residents to contact the company they have service with to get information about curbside recycling to increase community involvement in being environmentally friendly. Faces of Haysville: Mindy Walz, Teacher of the Year

By Kathy Barkley
The Haysville Times

Congratulations to Mindy Walz for being nominated and chosen as Teacher of the Year for the 2005-2006 school year. It’s a great honor to receive such a reward, especially your very first year of teaching first grade. Walz says, “I want to thank Nelson for letting me work here. I’m so grateful to be part of the Nelson family. Everyone is awesome….teachers, adminstrators, custodians.” She enjoys working with people she likes and doing something she loves. (Don’t you just love that kind of enthusiasm? It’s contagious.)
Let me introduce you to Mindy Walz. She comes to us from a small western Kansas town called Oakley, where she was born in 1973. Walz is the third of nine children. She attended high school in Colby.
Walz has two beautiful daughters, Morgan (11 years) and Madison (7 years), who may just follow in their mom’s footsteps and pursue a teaching career. Before choosing teaching as a profession, she worked in the dentistry field for 4 years.
Walz graduated from Wichita State University, Magna Cum Laude. Since she was the third of nine children in her family, the younger ones looked up to her. That is what first peaked her interest in becoming a teacher. Walz worked in daycare and in preschool before Morgan and Madison started school. When she saw that yearning to learn with her own two daughters, she decided to pursue a teaching degree. Walz is glad she went to college and chose teaching.
When asked what she liked about Haysville schools, Walz said, “I love the small town atmosphere.” The family atmosphere reminds her of where she grew up.
A typical day for Walz is school-oriented. She says, “I get up, and I’m there when the doors open, and I’m there until the doors close. No day is the same.” She has a great deal of dedication.
When asked what her hobbies were, she replied, “I like to spend time with my family.” Walz and her daughters go to the lake or do other outdoor things/activities.
As for her plans for the future, “I’d love to stay in the Haysville area and continue teaching first grade.” Walz lives in Derby right now, but would like to move to Haysville.
Walz is definitely an asset to Nelson School. Again, congratulations! It’s been a job well done.
