Riggs Park Mother Goose Killed by Dogs

Haysville resident Roger Neugent shared the following sad news…

I thought that many of the people of Haysville who have visited Riggs Park, its pond, and who have fished or fed the geese might want to know that the Gray Goose, “Momma Goose” to some, was killed by two dogs that were roaming the park around Friday, March 1st or Saturday March 2nd. Two boys witnessed the attack, which took place in a drainage ditch between Riggs Park and Colt Stadium, and described two dogs that were also seen roaming Van Arsdale Ave. on Sunday March 3rd. One was a young Chocolate Lab mix with a pinkish collar and the other was a small, older, long-haired Yellow Lab mix missing a rear leg.
The carcass was removed the following Monday and the Haysville Police department was notified and patrols were informed to keep an eye out for that pair of “killer” dogs.

More On The Mayor And Haysville Forward

A few days have passed since Haysville Mayor Ken Hampton quit Haysville Forward Inc., the city’s economic development group, and he’s had time to reexamine the situation.

Not much has changed, although Hampton has decided he’ll allow the group to continue to meet at City Hall.

“We’re going to go ahead and allow them to meet where they have been meeting.”

He and the city’s other representative on the committee won’t be there, though, because of Hampton’s frustration over losing a March 1 vote to continue as the group’s president.

CHS Students Win At BPA Competition

Campus High School students did extremely well at the Business Professionals of America State Leadership Conference held recently in Wichita.
(BPA) is a career and technical student organization headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. BPA aims to develop leadership, academic, and technological skills in the workplace among students and leaders within the community.
“We are very proud of the accomplishments of our students,” said Jeremy Willig, Campus BPA Adviser. “This is the most students CHS has ever sent to the national competition and the most state awards and top finishes CHS has ever received. We look forward to bringing home more titles again this year when we travel to the BPA National Competition in Orlando from May 8 to May 12.”
Campus BPA students will be fund-raising to help with the cost of the trip. Any donations can be sent to Campus High School, Attention Jeremy Willig, at 2100 W. 55th Street South, Wichita, KS 67217. Checks should be made payable to Campus High School BPA.

CHS Alum Brings Back Swim-A-Thon Memories

Campus High School 1975 graduate Dr. Lyle Noordhoek participated in the CHS Swim-A-Thon during his junior and senior years on the swim team. When he heard five CHS seniors would be in the pool raising money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Kansas last weekend, he wanted to make a contribution.
Dr. Noordhoek, a pathologist in Hays, brought with him to Haysville a $500 donation and the desire to get back in his old high school’s pool. On Sunday, while CHS swimmers were in the pool, Dr. Noordhoek swam 3.5 miles bringing back memories of the last time he was in the pool 39 years ago participating in the Swim-A-Thon.
He is an avid swimmer logging a 3-to-5 mile swim every other Sunday and shorter 1-to-1.5 miles swim 1 to 2 times a week. After 2 hours in the pool, Dr. Noordhoek looked like after a brief rest he could swim another 3.5 miles.

Mayor Quits Haysville Forward Inc. And Says He Will Cut Funding For It

The mayor of Haysville has quit Haysville Forward Inc., the city’s economic development group, and says he’ll cut off any future city funding for it.

Ken Hampton made the announcement March 1 after he lost a vote to continue as the group’s president, which he’s been for the last several years.

“I was shocked, so I can’t remember the exact quote word for word, but it was basically he had the ability to shut down the committee, and as of now he considered HFI disbanded,” says Tim Massey, an HFI member and director of the Haysville Chamber of Commerce.
