Campus Colt Injured on Football Field

By Cathy Loffland
The Haysville Times

Campus High School’s very own John Simons was injured during the varsity football game last Friday night against Maize.
Simons was on the bottom of a dog pile, and when everybody got up, Simons was not able to get up with them. He was rushed from Maize by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital.
At first, Simons could not feel anything from the neck down and had problems with memory.
Simons was kept in the hospital until Saturday evening. He is recovering at home and has feeling in his back, but he’s still having some problems with memory.
This is Simon’s second concussion this year and his seventh total.
Simon’s football career is over, and he will be missed on the Colt’s team.

Colts Lose to Wichita NW

By Donna & Amy White
The Haysville Times

It was a cold night in Haysville last Friday not only for Campus football fans but also for the team. While diehard fans bundled up in coats, hats and gloves, the Colts were looking for another way to heat up the field.
Friday night’s game saw Campus face off against Wichita Northwest in the first of three district games. Both teams were slow to start and remained scoreless until the middle of the second quarter. Northwest took the lead in the second quarter with a lone touchdown, 0-7.
After a well-rounded, but cold halftime show, the Colts returned to the field. Within the first minute of play, Northwest scored another touchdown and kick for the extra point. The 0-14 deficit seemed to light a fire under the Colts. Campus scored their first seven points later in the quarter with a touchdown pass from Ryan Burke to Michael Hyde to close the gap. Campus ends the quarter down but not out, 7-14.
And just as the night air began to really chill, the two teams turned up the heat. Campus and Northwest combined for 36 points in the fourth quarter alone. Northwest added nine points with an interception return and a field goal. Campus responded with a 54-yard pass from Burke to Hyde. The failed two-point conversion left the Colts down 13-23.
Before the game was over, Northwest added two more touchdowns with matching extra point kicks. Sandwiched in the middle of the two touchdowns was Campus’ final touchdown of the game. Burke and Hyde would team up one last time in this game. However, the duo could not fill the 17-point gap between the two teams. Campus loses this one 20-37.
Campus is ranked second in the AVCTL Division 2 behind McPherson with a 4-1 league record, 4-3 overall. The loss to Northwest puts the Colts in a must-win situation for the final two district games against Maize and Wichita North. Campus will travel to Maize this week and return home on October 27th for their final home game of the season against North.

Cross Country Takes League

By Student Reporter Brayden Barrientez
The Haysville Times

The Campus Cross Country team competed in the Ark Valley Chisolm Trail League on Saturday, October 14th. In the boys race, a race where all 5 of the runners would have to perform well, the boys did just that.
Chris Taylor lead the boys, running a 5K time of 17:01 and coming in 4th place. Next came Brayden Barrientez at 17:18 at 6th place. Both Chris and Brayden claimed 1st team AVCTL Division II honors. Tre’ Doherty and C.J. Manuel took 9th and 10th, claiming 2nd team AVCTL honors. Possibly the most surprising performance came from Nick Ward, a freshmen, who took 16th place. These key performances resulted in the boys cross country team to take 1st place in AVCTL Division II, beating the defending champion Newton Railroaders by 14 points. Campus boys haven’t won league in over 25 years, making the whole thing even more fantastic.
On the girl’s side, the Campus girls took 4th place. The girl’s varsity race was a bit harder than the boy’s race, but the girls were nevertheless successful. Bailey Martinson and Emily Capoun claimed 2nd team AVCTL Division II honors. The girls have their hopes set high this weekend for an even better race at Regionals this Saturday, and hope to qualify for 6A State.
In Junior Varsity, the Campus boys dominated. Casey Amos placed 1st; Cooper Clark placed 2nd; Channing Tate placed 3rd; Garrett Patrick placed 6th; Joshua Whalen placed 7th; and Marshall James Berube placed 8th. In the girls JV race, Chelsea Chavez placed 4th.
So over the weekend, I wondered to myself: What was the best part of it all? Was it the look on Coach Curless’ face after the race? Was it receiving the plaque that will go in the Campus trophy case? Was it the collective groans from the Newton runners when it was announced that we had won it? Or maybe it will come several years from now, when we can look at the banner in the CHS gym as we can all say to ourselves, “I was a part of that team.”
The Campus Colts compete at Regionals this Saturday to decide which teams and runners qualify for the State Competition at Rim Rock Farm. Both teams expect to qualify. Expectations for each runner have been set high by the coaches. The stakes are especially high for the boys, who have 2 seniors on the team. Varsity boy runners include: Casey Amos, Britt Barrientez, Brayden Barrientez, Cooper Clark, Tre’ Doherty, C.J. Manuel, Chris Taylor, and Nick Ward. Varsity girl runners include: Katie Bruner, Emily Capoun, Chelsea Chavez, Larissa Dunn, Lisa Kemmer, Bailey Martinson, and Lizzy Spence. Plan to hear more about Campus Cross Country success in Regionals and State in the next couple weeks.

Colts Win at Homecoming

By Donna & Amy White
The Haysville Times

If you missed Campus’ Friday night football game, you will be kicking yourself by the time you finish reading this. It was a magical night for the Colts in their Homecoming game against Arkansas City. And of course, the big question on everyone’s mind was who will win king and queen?
The first quarter of play for Campus was no indication of how the evening would turn out. The Colts took a 6-0 lead over Ark City off a 57-yard pass from Ryan Burke to Michael Hyde. But the end of the quarter was only the beginning of the stampede.
In the second quarter, Campus stepped it up a notch. Ryan Burke scored a touchdown on an 8-yard run. Aaron McGraw would score a 2-point conversion off a pass from Burke. McGraw scored again later in the half on a 32-yard pass from Burke. Brandon Daley gave Campus the extra point with the kick.
Ark City scored their first touchdown in between both of Campus’ and added a field goal to end the half. The Colts maintain the lead at the end of the first half, 21-10.
Halftime hosted the traditional Homecoming coronation ceremony where each of the candidates are introduced before crowning a king and queen. The queen candidates were driven to the 50-yard line in white convertible cars while being serenaded by the Campus Marching Band. The king candidates then escorted the ladies out of the car and onto the football field. Then the announcement was made. Campus’ 2006 Fall Homecoming king and queen are Jacob Crossman and Kasey Hartman!

As the ceremony concluded, the Colts took to the field for the third quarter. And it was a big quarter for the Colts. It was also the longest quarter of football in recent memory. Campus started the quarter with Blake Phillips’ first touchdown of the game. Daley’s kick was good for the extra point.
Somewhere in the third quarter, Ark City scored two touchdowns for another 14 points. However, the Colts 27 points overshadowed their efforts. Blake Phillips scored another touchdown before the end of the quarter followed by touchdowns scored by Michael Hyde and Ryan Burke. Campus ends the quarter ahead 48-24.
Campus’ fourth quarter was uneventful compared to the previous quarter, but still prosperous. Ark City opened the quarter with their final touchdown of the game. Blake Phillips scored his third touchdown of the game on a 20-yard interception return. Lorenzo Jefferson closed Campus’ scoring with his 5-yard run for the touchdown. The Colts dominated this game to win 62-31.
The win keeps the Colts atop the AV-CTL Division II rankings tied with McPherson with a 4-1 league record. Campus is 4-2 overall. The Colts turned in 479 yards of offense and 41 points in the second half. Ryan Burke made 11 of 20 passes for 268 yards. Burke also had two touchdowns of his own and ran 104 yards.
Campus’ next encounter will be this Friday at Colt Stadium against Wichita Northwest at 7 pm.
And Campus soccer fans, don’t miss your last chance to see the Colts at home against Newton on Tuesday, October 17th. Game time is 4 pm.

Colts Stampede over Winfield Vikings

By Sara Loffland
The Haysville Times

September 29, 2006, will go down in Colt’s history as a victory. Last Friday, the Campus Colts played the Winfield Vikings, and the Colts won 31-12. The Colts accumulated 296 yards, while the Vikings got 161. The Vikings seemed to be having trouble throughout the game with fumbles and the quarterback exchange. They started the game with the first three downs, but they fumbled, which lost them the chance of making the first down on the fourth.
Although they had many fumbles, their kicker, Luke Pray, nailed field goals of 42 and 37 yards. Colt’s player Ryan Burke scored on a 9-yard quarterback keeper. The Colts kicked a field goal before half time to make the score 10-6. At the beginning of the third quarter, Burke ran, and John Simmons made a seven-yard touchdown pass that made the score 17-6. The Vikings made another fatal fumble, and the Colts made a touchdown that put the score at 24-6 . The Colts were forced to punt after Brant Calvin made a seven yard touchdown, putting the score at 24-12. The Vikings fumbled again at the 5, and the Colts ended the game with a touchdown, leaving the final score at 31-12.

Colts Win at Home

Hey Haysville, the workweek is over, and Friday night football is back! Last Friday marked the Campus Colts’ first official home game of the season. And it was a nail-biter! The Colts faced off against McPherson with hopes of claiming their first win of the season.
Nobody could have predicted how this game would turn out. McPherson jumped out to a 0-12 lead in the first quarter of play. The Colts worked their way to a touchdown in the second quarter. And Brandon Daley’s kick for the extra point cut McPherson’s lead 7-12. But in the final minutes of the half, McPherson scored another 7 points to give them a 7-19 lead at the half.
During the halftime break, Campus fans enjoyed the traditional halftime show. The Campus Pom Pon Squad performed a routine followed by the Campus Marching Band. Both gave great performances. However, one question remained in my mind: Where are the band uniforms? Through four years of my own band experience at Campus there was not a performance that we were not in complete uniform. It just made a more presentable package.
Anyway, back to the game and the second half of play. Campus came out fighting. Through fumbled plays by both teams, the Colts recover and inch closer with Ryan Burke’s touchdown at the 6:54 mark. Daley’s kick was good for the extra point. The seven points bring the Colts within five of McPherson with a score of 14-19.
The fourth and final quarter of the game was the game clincher. McPherson scored right off the bat giving them a comfortable 14-26 lead. Campus had some troubles throughout the game with getting a hand on the ball and keeping it. But in the final minutes of the game, the team turned it up a notch.
Campus scored another touchdown at the 6:13 mark to bring them within five points again. The Colts kept working for the common goal and with 51 seconds left found themselves at the 5-yard line. With less than a minute on the clock, Campus knew that they might only get one chance to make the play. And once again, Ryan Burke would carry the ball to the endzone for the touchdown. Burke’s touchdown pushed the Colts ahead of McPherson 27-26.
In the final five seconds of the game, the Colts put it all together and kept McPherson contained. And with that, the buzzer sounded and Campus had won its first home game of the season 27-26. And for the second week in a row, McPherson lost by just one point.
On the way to the car, we were walking behind a dad and his young son. The dad told the son, “That is why you never give up.” And he could not have been more right. The Colts never gave up and kept pushing through the mistakes to come out on top. Without sounding too much like a big purple dinosaur, what a valuable life lesson to learn.
Campus plays at home again this Friday against Newton at Colt Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m. Then the Colts will be on the road for the rest of September before returning home again on October 6th to face Arkansas City. Go Colts!

Campus Soccer Starts Season

By Donna & Amy White
The Haysville Times

The weather could not have been better for Campus soccer fans on Tuesday. The Colts played their first game of the Campus/Goddard Invitational on Tuesday against Winfield. The game would also be the team’s first home game of the season.

Campus may have the deck stacked against them this year. The Colts have a young team with the freshmen and sophomore members outnumbering the upper class 27 to 10. These younger players will have to make the extra effort to step up to strengthen the team.

The Colts are coached once again by Head Coach Jeromy Swearingen and assistants Casey Meier, Crystal Edwards and Ryan Daugherty. These four individuals have the sometimes-undesired task of trying to guide the team in the right direction.

Five seniors lead the team this year; they include Brandon Daley, Chris Taylor, Brian Box, Nick Hovey and Eric Longstreet. Juniors include Tracy Crum, Gabe Massey, Marc Mayer, James Terronez and Sam Rudd. Seven sophomores round out the varsity squad; they include CJ Manuel, Tre Doherty, Jordan Hooper, Kevin Ayala, Sylvester Ribaudo, Dustin Crum and James Haynes. And freshman Taylor Parrott will fill the backup goalkeeper position.

The Colts first game of the season was a 1-1 tie against Bishop Carroll last Tuesday. On Thursday, the team followed up with a loss to Maize. So the Colts took the long weekend to refresh and look ahead to this week’s tournament.

Campus’ first game of the Campus/Goddard Invitational took place on Tuesday against Winfield. The first half of the game had the Colts coming up short on offense. It just seemed like they were not able to finish the run to the goal. And with just over 12 minutes left in the half, the most discouraging thing happened. The Colts were standing in the wrong place at the wrong time and gave Winfield their first goal by own goal. Campus went into the halftime break down 0-1.

After the break, the Colts seemed to come back better than ever. In the second half, there were many very close shots on goal. However, none of those shots ever found the back of the net. And sooner than later, the Colts focus was shifted to defense.

About halfway through the second half, Winfield increased their lead to 2 with another goal. Campus tried their best to slow down Winfield’s offense and almost succeeded. But with less than three minutes left in the game, Winfield hit the upper corner of the net for their third goal to win the game, 0-3.

You have to give Campus goalie Eric Longstreet an A for effort on that last goal because he gave everything he had to save that ball. We also have to give some recognition to sophomores Jordan Hooper and Kevin Ayala who played the entire game with heart and never gave up.

So Campus moves to the non-winner (no L-words) side of the bracket and will face off again on Thursday at 3:30 pm. A win will place the Colts in the battle for fifth place on Saturday in Goddard at 11 am. A loss will see the Colts at 9 am on Saturday in Goddard. After the tournament, Campus will not return home until Thursday, September 14th against Salina South.

In other Campus sports, the football team lost their first game of the season in Goddard last Friday. The Colts will play their first home game this Friday at Colt

Lady Colts to Go on to Soccer Championship

By Donna & Amy White
The Haysville Times

There are many things this time of year that get people talking. Graduations, River Festival, gas prices, and definitely Campus girl’s soccer! The Lady Colts have shown Haysville and the soccer world what they are made of.
Campus signed off on their regular season last Friday when they traveled to Salina Central for a game that was postponed twice due to weather. The ladies got the upper hand early in the game scoring the first goal, but a Salina Central penalty kick and two other goals put Campus in unfamiliar territory. The 3-2 loss was only the fifth of the season for the Lady Colts.
The ladies put the loss behind them to look ahead to Tuesday’s regional game. The Region 2 bracket put the Lady Colts up against Wichita Southeast with the winner heading to Garden City to face the Garden City/Derby winner for the Regional Championship on Thursday.
Campus took no time getting down to business on Tuesday. Within the first five minutes of the game, the ladies scored two goals. The first goal scored by Jessica Hubeli came from an assist by Kayla Delzer. Delzer would turn right around and score the next goal assisted by Megan Sykes. Campus led Southeast 2-0 at the end of the first half.
In the second half, the tone of the game seemed to change. Southeast was trying to throw their weight around unsuccessfully. The Lady Colts held their own, but according to the opposing fans next to us Campus should have had many yellow cards. In fact, there may have been a puddle under their chairs from all the crying they did.
All the drama only fueled the ladies in their quest for a win. Kayla Delzer scored another goal assisted by Lorielle Slates. Slates claimed the next goal for herself. And Johanna Adolfs, who had some trouble standing up in this game, scored Campus’ final goal with the assist from Delzer.
That goal at the 2:49 mark almost guaranteed the ladies a second round game on Thursday. But in soccer, you don’t count your chickens until the whistle sounds. However, in this case I think it was safe to say the Lady Colts won 5-0.
The win advances the ladies to the championship game, which was yet to be played at press time. Campus has all the pieces to make a beautiful puzzle that includes a championship or two. As possibly the most successful girl’s soccer team in school history, only time will tell how long the season will last. We wish the ladies the best of luck and continued success!

Lady Colts Clinch AVCTL Title

Can anybody stop the Lady Colts soccer team these days? With the momentum the ladies have this season, it seems the only thing that has slowed them down is the unpredictable Kansas weather. Campus has just a handful of games remaining to make this the best season in ladies soccer history.
Last Thursday, Campus hosted the Goddard Lions. Goddard has a history of strong soccer teams, so this game was a real test for the Lady Colts. The two teams battled back and forth in the first half of play. Campus’ first goal would come unassisted from Lorielle Slates. Later in the half, Johanna Adolfs would finish the Lady Colt’s second goal of the half with some assistance from Kayla Delzer. Campus would lead at the half, 2-1.
Goddard did their best to deter Campus’ efforts in the second half taking a 3-2 lead. But the Lady Colts could not be deterred as Amy Brickman tied the game at three with a goal. Both teams refused to quit and Goddard, once again, took the lead. However, Campus kept pushing to the goal and tied the game again with another Johanna Adolfs goal.
As the end drew near, Campus kicked it into high gear not wanting to go into overtime. The Lady Colts had several great scoring opportunities in the final minutes of the game. Finally, the ladies would capitalize as Amy Brickman’s shot would run short and Lorielle Slates was able to follow through and finish for her second goal of the game.
The Lady Colts took a 5-4 lead and put the pressure on Goddard who had some close shots on goal. As the final whistle blew, the Lady Colts knew that they had done their job. Campus defeated Goddard 5-4. And the icing on the cake, winning this game meant that the ladies clinched the first place position in Division II to be named AV-CTL Champions!
On Friday, the Lady Colts were scheduled to make up a game from April 6th against Salina Central. But once again, Kansas weather prevailed and the game was postponed until May 12th in Salina.
On Monday, the team was back in action against Salina South. The first half of the game was a little slow for the ladies who trailed 2-1 at halftime. Amy Regier would score the Lady Colts only goal of the half with the assist from Slates.
In the second half, Campus refocused and went to work scoring their first goal of the half within the first five minutes. Lorielle Slates would score the tying goal of the game. She would score another goal in the final minutes on a breakaway that would give Campus the lead. Her two goals and one assist would provide the Lady Colts with a 3-2 win over Salina South.
Both wins push the Lady Colts to a 9-1 record on the regular season and a 9-4 record overall. Campus has just two home games remaining. The first being Thursdays game against McPherson followed by the ladies final home appearance on Monday, May 8th against Buhler.
You have to give the Lady Colts a big round of applause for all their hard work this season. Not only to hold a 9-1 record, but also to win five of those games with a seven point spread shows that these ladies know how to play the game. Congratulations to the Lady Colts and keep it up!

HJBL Not to Use City Facilities

By N.N. Wyant
The Haysville Times

The Haysville Junior Baseball League will not be using the city facilities this year. This comes after a series of e-mail debates between Kevin Groom and city personnel. The council passed the okay of HJBL’s use of the baseball diamonds upon one condition. The council unanimously wanted the league to use the facilities, but noted that Groom would have to comply with the contract, which basically stipulates that the city wanted to see the operating expenses and meet with the board of the HJBL.
Groom eventually showed up to the meeting, talking on a cell phone as he entered the meeting. “I see it as a micromanagement by the city. We have nothing going on this year that we need the complex.”
Monday’s city council meeting was standing room only by the time the mayor called things to order at 7:00. The crowd was not there to complain to the council. Instead they were there for recognition. Cindy Taylor from the Senor Center spoke before the council in appreciation of the more than 50 volunteers that help at the Center.
Some additional recognition was also due. Dave Harper, Waste Water Supervisor for the city, received the Hatfield award in recognition of his superior work for the city.
The Mayor read the city’s proclamation of Volunteer Week in Haysville, mentioning the numerous people who volunteer in Haysville and help keep the community what it is.
The Senior Center volunteers were not the only special guests Monday, County Commissioner Tim Norton gave the council an update of the many projects Sedgwick County has planned that will affect Haysville. Two miles of 87th street will be “cold mixed.” This is a process of re-surfacing that will save the county $450,000 per mile when compared to other methods of surfacing. Additionally, Norton told the council that a lot of progress has been made on the cleaning of Cowskin Creek, noting that at one farm 1,200 tires were removed to aid in drainage.
Remember the railroad project? It won first place in the Kansas public works competition. The project will now compete at the national level.
After all the “feel good” city discussion, the council got down to business, taking a serious look at pornography. An ordinance strictly limiting the operations of pornography shops was passed 6-0 by the council. Among other things, the ordinance would ban such shops from operating within 1000 feet of a residential area, church, school, government building, park, or other such business. The old ordinance stipulated 500 feet.
On a sad note, Carla Mann is resigning from her duties as the Administrative Secretary. Several members of the council noted that her presence will be missed.
The city is finishing up their solicitation for bids for trash removal from the city. The current proposal would allow for recycling as well as large item collection on specified days, and recycling on a volunteer basis.
The Latchkey program is experiencing a $2 increase from previous years to ward off the expected rise in snacks for children, due to the rising cost of fuel. The program has not had an increase in cost since 2003 and operates at a much cheaper rate than other programs in the surrounding area.
Haysville has been recognized as a tree city for the 6th straight year. To keep up with the tradition, there will be a tree planting at Plagans Carpenter park on May 3rd at 4:00 p.m.
