As the city’s slogan suggests: Good things are happening in Haysville.
That notion is supported by a rash of recent business construction and expansion in Wichita’s neighbor to the south. A new hotel is going in near the Haysville exit off the Kansas Turnpike, and work is under way to bring the city its first McDonald’s — which some say is a significant milestone for a growing city.
Last night Haysville was shaken by a 5.6 Magnitude earthquake around 10:53pm. The earthquake epicenter was in Oklahoma just East of OKC but it was felt as far away as here in Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, Texas and Tennessee.
I believe this may be the strongest earthquake to ever shake Haysville.
A few comments about the quake from our Facebook page…
Shook the glasses in our cabinets.
Im used to our 2 story house being shaken around a lot by the wind (like we had today) but what made it so surreal was that we were in the basement and it was moving. Took a minute to realize what was actually happening.
Us too!!! Crazy
We are visiting family in Ark City…shook the cabinets and the lights were swinging. Crazy!
I actually heard it coming… sounded like distant thunder, then it shook pretty good, followed by a swaying motion for a few seconds. rattled the dishes in the kitchen
Sedgwick County Commissioners are considering a proposal to build a new $2 million fire station in Haysville.
The fire station sitting at 71st street south and West street is 30 years old. County firefighters believe its day is done.
“We have old plumbing old wiring and old connections and so were trying to save money in the long run and preventive wise,” said county fire chief Gary Curmode.
Two men in Haysville filing false reports tied up the work of a number of law enforcement officers and forced the lockdown of several Haysville schools before police tracked them down through their cellphone calls to 911.
The callers were claiming they were victims of sexual abuse. There was nothing to that, Haysville police say.
Nelson Elementary School Principal Mike Mitchener (center of photo) stands at the crosswalk on Grand
Avenue near Delos Street with his students on Wednesday, October 5 in celebration of International Walk
To School Day. Staff and students all around Haysville USD 261 took a little extra time to participate in
the event. Communities around the country are using the walk or bike to school as the first step to change
community culture and create environments that are more inviting for everyone, young and old alike.
