Hillcrest Almost Ready

The Haysville Time
By Cathy Loffland

Have you noticed all the changes going on at Hillcrest Plaza?
Well, all the changes are due to the new owners of the strip center, W.G. Farha and Ted Timsah. They are partners who have formed the company of F& T Properties.
F & T Properties have been in business for five years. They build strip centers anywhere from 4,000 square feet to 25,000 square feet all over Kansas. They also renovate buildings in downtown Wichita.
They chose to purchase the existing strip center in Haysville because it is a growing community.
“With Haysville growing as much they are we believe [Haysville citizens] deserve a higher quality retail than what they have now,” said Timsah.
The changes to the center are necessary to bring in higher quality retail. The changes being made are face-lift to the front of the building, new sign, a new parking lot, and additional lighting.
F & T Properties already has two new tenants. There will be a Movie Gallery and an Advance America check-cashing service.
Movie Gallery is a movie rental store and will also have video games. The Movie Gallery will be opening their doors November.
Advance America is a check-cashing service for people who need money before their payday. They have already opened their doors and are ready for business.
“We also have someone looking at the space where Faye’s Diner used to be,” said Timsah. One of the prospects looking into the space is a Haysville resident. A regional group is also looking into the area.
“Buying an existing strip center and doing remodeling makes leases lower than new building leases are,” said Timsah.
If you are looking for a spot or would like to see something go into the Hillcrest Plaza you can reach Ted Timsah at 262-6400.

Haysville Sonic in Top 12

The Haysville Times
By Cathy Loffland

This is Sonic’s second year in a row to be one of the top 12 companies to go to the Sonic games that are held yearly at the National Convention.
“To be one of top 12 stores is a huge honor, especially since we have done this two years in a row,” said Sarah Queen, Haysville Sonic Manager.
The process starts in January and goes through July. In the first part, there are about 2,700 stores participating, hoping to make it to the finals. A secret shopper visits and grades the restaurant on food quality, food safety audits and the speed with which they get the orders out.
After all this is done they narrow the field down to 48 stores and these stores go to the knowledge bowl. The Haysville store missed only three questions at the knowledge bowl.
The top 12 stores go to Vegas for seven days, from September 17–24 for the Sonic games. Each store takes seven people to compete. The trip is all paid for and each team member also receives spending money for the trip. The games last only two of the seven days they are in Vegas, so there are all kinds of activities planned for them the rest of the time. They will get to see David Copperfield and Jay Leno while they are there.
Each store will compete in the team competition, where they have to be able to put out 20 correct, good quality orders in 20 minutes.
Then there is an individual competition and in which they are judged on speed, accuracy and quality in the positions they are trained for.
According to Queen, there are only two stores in this region that have made it. Queen has been the manager for about six months. She started about the same time the contest began.
“I’m extremely proud of my crew. We have practiced, and we do our job right,” said Queen. “This year we are really focused on the team event. In our franchisee of Sonic Restaurant Industries there have been no stores that have medaled in the team event and we want to be the first,” said Queen.
If all three of SRI stores medal, the franchise will double the prize. In the individual games the Gold brings home $2,000, Silver brings home $1,000 and Bronze brings home $500. In the team event the Gold will bring home $5,000.
Last year, Haysville had four people who brought medals home. They were Nick Smith, Gold Medalist on dresser, Anthony Motes, Gold Medalist on Grill, Ricky Smith, Gold Medalist on Swamp (drop fryer), and Tara Smith, Silver Medalist on Switchboard.
The team members for this year are Ricky Smith – Dresser, Wesley Moore – Grill, Michael Rubi – Swamp (drop fryer), Stephanie York – Switchboard, Sarah Queen – team Leader, Jennifer Durham – Fountain Drinks, Haylie Bybee – Carhop.
We want to wish the Haysville team all the luck in Vegas. Bring home some medals!

Reunited and it feels so good

Food-4-Less Manager Tim Massey

Haysville hasn’t been a town divided for almost four months now. The year and a half of construction which caused pains in the necks and pocketbooks of residents who had to take the time and pay for the gas to go from east side to west side to support local businesses are nothing but a memory.
And those businesses are glad.
Almost all of the stores close to the construction site are feeling the positive effects of the opened underpass and a re-united city.
“Right now business is good,” said Paresh Patel of Diamond Shamrock, which had really suffered while the Main and Grand intersection was closed. “Things are getting better and better every month.” Continue reading “Reunited and it feels so good”

What’s in the Big Red Barn?

The Haysville Times – April 19, 2004 – 3:46 PM
By Cathy Loffland
Well, the fixture is River City Rubber Works. The owners are Dana DeCicco, Mary Odette and LeAnne Hubbard. DeCicco and Odette first started the company in 1996, after working together for two years in the greeting card business. They were doing cards that matched characteristics of different states. For instance, they had a hay bale on it for Kansas that read: “Hay there!”
“We were doing wrapping paper and gift bags to match the cards and somebody asked us if we did rubber stamps, and we thought we could do that,” said DeCicco. So they dropped the cards and went to rubber stamps.
The team went to Superior Stamps in Wichita and talked to Kenny Lowrack and asked him how they could get into rubber stamps. Lowrack gave them advice and made an investment to help them get their first catalog out. “To this day Lowrack will call us and tell us about a piece of equipment for sale or we call him for advice,” said DeCicco.
