If you thought you knew the story of The Princess and the Pea, you may be in for a walloping surprise in this hilarious re-telling of Hans Christian Anderson’s classic fairy tale! This high energy musical, performed by talented youth, ages 7-18, from Music Theatre for Young People will open October 5th and run through Oct 7th at Century II: Mary Jane Teall Theater.
Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for students (group tickets also available) and can be purchased online through Wichita Tix at www.wichitatix.com or by phone at 316-219-4849. Tickets can also be purchased at the door prior to each performance. Performance times are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sunday matinee at 2:30pm.
Based on “The Princess and the Pea” by Hans Christian Andersen, Once Upon a Mattress centers around Princess Winnifred who arrives at Prince Dauntless the Drabs castle hoping for the hand of the prince. His mother, Queen Agravain, insists that her son can only marry a princess of true blood (one who can feel a pea that is underneath a pile of mattresses). Carried on a wave of wonderful songs through this rollicking spin on the familiar classic of royal courtship and comeuppance, Once Upon a Mattress provides side-splitting shenanigans that appeal to audience of all ages. Chances are you’ll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.
