Bike Back To School

We all have fond memories of riding a bike to school. Just thirty years ago, nearly 90 percent of all children biked or walked to school regularly. Today, it’s just 13 percent. But biking is making a comeback. Biking is a healthy, active way to get to school.

The Health and Wellness Coalition of Wichita (HWC) is dedicated to improving physical activity and promoting good nutrition for all generations living in the greater Wichita area. In an effort to raise awareness and get children physically active, during the week of August 22 ? 26, Wichita students are encouraged to begin bicycling to and from school when feasible and safe.

The Health and Wellness Coalition of Wichita (HWC) encourages parents to talk with their children on how to ride safely. Maybe even conduct a practice session before school starts.
1. Wear a helmet all the times.
2. Ride right! Go with the flow of traffic & ride single file.
3. Stop and look both ways before entering the street.
4. Obey all traffic signs, signals and laws.
5. If you are riding on the sidewalk, ride slowly and watch for cars.
6. Scan and signal before turning.

To encourage students to explore biking to school, The Health and Wellness Coalition of Wichita (HWC) will sponsor a photo contest. Go to the Coalition?s website (www.hwcwichita.org), check out the Bike Back2 School page, and then send a photo of your student(s) biking to school. Include name, school, grade and phone number or email address. You will then become eligible to win some fun bicycle accessories and the photo will be posted on the website.
