Downtown Architectural Bike Tours Set for Saturday


The Wichita Downtown Development Corp. has again organized an I Bike Douglas Ride for this Saturday, June 23rd at 9 a.m.
The Architectural Ride departs at 9 a.m. from WDDC?s office at 507 E. Douglas. This tour will take an in-depth look at some of the architectural treasures strewn throughout Downtown. From sleek modern designs to art deco influences, to ornately carved limestone treasures, Downtown Wichita offers numerous examples of the city?s architectural heritage. Come prepared to learn abut Wichita?s fascinating architectural history and heritage including buildings by Proudfoot & Bird; Schmitt, Boucher & Overend; Richards
McCarthy & Bulford; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill and the influence of Frank Lloyd Wright on Wichita. Over 30 buildings will be featured in this ride led by native Wichitan and architectural historian, Dee Starkey.
These rides are designed to be leisurely and all ages are welcome. Cameras are allowed and encouraged, as there will be ample opportunity to capture some unique and memorable photographs. All rides are free, but donations are appreciated.

Nearly 30 Wichita Businesses Recognized As ?Bicycle Friendly?

Bodyworx Physical Therapy is just one of 29 Wichita businesses selected as a Wichita Bicycle Friendly Business by the Health and Wellness Coalition of Wichita (HWC) Bike Wichita steering committee. Cody Barnett, PT at Bodyworx applied for the designation. ?We are a very exercise and bike friendly clinic. In fact, we have a vintage bicycle hanging on the ceiling of our waiting room. We have a bike rack for patient use and bike motif decorations on the walls. We also offer specialized bicycle fitting for those with back or neck pain.?
In addition, Bodyworx offers Computrainer cycling analysis to determine optimal pedaling for endurance and performance. They offer VO2 Max testing performed on your own bicycle using the Computrainer.
Bodyworx has also sponsored multiple cycling events in the past 7 years including the Tour de Cure, Mudwater Triathlon/Duathlon, Derby Triathlon, Wicked Wind ride, and they are an original and continual sponsor of the Kansas River Valley Triathlon Club. Bodyworx has supported the Prairie Travelers rails to trails projects.
As a physical therapy practice, Bodyworx wants to encourage everyone to keep moving to improve his or her health. Barnett has given several community talks on the prevention of cycling injuries and encourages everyone to ride a bicycle, as it is a perfect exercise and a great way to get and stay healthy.

The Wichita Bicycle Friendly Business campaign honors businesses, corporations, organizations, associations, government agency, and non-profit organizations that actively promote bicycling. The HWC Bike Wichita steering committee has selected 29 deserving businesses that engage in bicycle friendly approaches that include but are not limited to the following.

PorkChoppd Shop Ride

This Saturday the 19th is the 1st PorkChoppd Shop ride Anyone who wants to ride from the shop over to Sedgwick Co. Park for a nice ride through the area and back. We will be leaving from the shop around 5:00 pm There is parking there also. After the ride PorkChoppd will be throwing down Brauts, Hots and drinks for all.

Bike Tours – May 19th

Bike Tours Return to Downtown.
In celebration of bike month, the Wichita Downtown Development Corp. has again organized the I Bike Douglas Rides. Three themed tours will be offered on May 19th, each lasting approximately 45 minutes.

The Architectural Ride departs at 1 p.m. from WDDC?s office at 507 E. Douglas. This tour will take an in depth look at some of the architectural treasures strewn along Douglas. From sleek modern designs to art deco influences, to ornately carved limestone treasures, Downtown Wichita offers numerous examples of the city?s architectural heritage. Come prepared to learn some fascinating facts about Wichita?s architectural gems.

The Heroes Ride will depart from in front of the Drury Plaza Hotel Broadview, 400 W. Douglas at 2 p.m. This ride in honor of Armed Services Day will feature stops at various sculptures and memorials throughout the core area dedicated to heroes. We?ll visit the Keeper of the Plains, the beloved Indian Warrior that watches over Wichita, and Veteran Memorial Park, the serene little park located along the Arkansas River that houses numerous monuments. The tour will also include stops by the Old County Courthouse?s Soldiers & Sailors Monument and the Law Enforcement Memorial by local artist Connie Ernatt at City Hall.

The Victorian Ride will depart at 3 p.m. from Sedgwick-County Historical Museum, 204 S. Main, and will focus on the elaborate and ornate structures that stand as graceful reminders of Wichita?s past including the Historical Museum and its stately neighbor, the recently renovated Carnegie Library.
The day will end with tours inside two Victorian homes, including one of Wichita?s most historic, the Schnitzler Mansion at Gilbert and South Broadway.
