Donations Of Kids’ Bikes Down

From the Wichita Eagle

A bicycle shop that collects and repairs Christmas bicycles to give to needy children says donations are down this year and is asking people to dig out their children s old bikes.

Ruth Holliday, co-owner of the Bicycle Pedaler, figures she and her staff have collected and repaired more than 6,000 bikes for donation at Christmas over the past 20 years.

Full story here.

Bicycles For Kids (Formerly Bikes For Tots)

Once I found out it was happening it was too late to gather up donations to purchase a bike to donate but you are still welcome to donate a new bike as an individual or on behalf of the Coasters. Drop the new bike off at Club DebRicks 4553 S. Broadway. The Bikes For Kids parade begins at 2:00pm, Saturday, December 4th (right after the Delano parade). Different starting point this year! The parade begins at the Boondocks bar, 1525 W. MacArthur Road (just West of Seneca on MacArthur) and ends at Club DebRicks. Come ride in the parade and help them celebrate.

I was told this year the parade permit is already in hand :-)

Bike Path Along Wichita River Decays, But Fixes Won’t Come Cheap

From Kansas.com

By STAN FINGER

Officer Steve Jerrell was walking along the bike path next to the Little Arkansas River when he came to an abrupt halt.

“Look at that view,” he said, pointing.

The golden leaves of a tree branch stretching over the water provided an artistic frame for the blue water stretching toward the horizon, the colors vibrant in the autumn afternoon sunshine.

Coasters As Elves

Pictured above are those that donated their time and labor to assemble bikes for the Wichita Dream Center’s Christmas For Wichita. From what I hear it was a busy but fun time.

Elves are still needed! There will be one more assembly day so please come out and help if you can. No mechanical skills required.
When: Sunday, December 5th at 1:00pm
Where: Believers Tabernacle Church 2000 S. Hillside (S/E corner of Mt Vernon & Hillside).

Below are some of the bikes that were assembled. Thanks to Ralph for the photos.

Christmas Parade In Historic Delano

Historic Delano Christmas Parade, Saturday, December 4th at noon. You must decorate yourself and/or your bike to participate. No Santa’s though. There will be only one Santa and he’ll be leading the parade.

Meet at Lawrence Dumont Stadium/Metropolitan Baptist Church parking lot no later than 11:30am just as we do for the St Patrick’s parade.

Our entry number is: 17. The spaces will be marked but if you have trouble finding this or can’t remember the number, just look for volunteers wearing bright orange vests. They will be able to assist you in the staging area.

Please do not throw candy or gifts. You can hand these things out as you walk/ride.

The festivities begin with a Christmas Parade along Douglas Avenue from the clock tower to Walnut Street.
Help welcome Santa as he arrives in Delano.
As evening approaches, the lights will start to come on in Delano. Join us as we welcome the season with our holiday lights.

Winter Moon Twilight Rides

The original date of the 12th has to be changed to the 19th due to rain.

From Lee’s Bike Shop

As winter approaches, the days will be getting shorter and colder but we STILL want to ride our bicycles!! So what’s a cyclist to do??

Ride Anyway.

On the Winter Moon Twilight Rides we will cruise, as a group, at night by the light of the moon, sort of. The rides will take place at parks and paths on the west side of Wichita and may stretch down the river path to downtown, depending on the starting location. During the rides we may stop at a restaurant to eat, if it is desired!! We are very excited about these night rides and look forward to seeing everyone there! It will be mandatory to have front and back lights mounted on your bicycle or helmet! And please remember to dress accordingly.

Our First Twilight Ride:
November 19, 2010
Location: Sedgwick County Park (South Parking Lot)
Starting Time: 6:00 p.m.
Route: Park Paths

All types of “bicycles” are welcome. We will be traveling at a slow to moderate pace.

Distance of rides will be from 5 to 15 miles depending on the route. Some of our routes will be at Sedgwick County Park, along The Arkansas River and other scenic locations. Check our website for monthly details and weather caused cancellations.

Over the Summer Lee’s Bike Shop hosted the Third Friday Family Restaurant rides.
