Last Night's Bendix Automatic Clinic

Bob explains the differences in the Bendix Automatics.

Just as planned we met up at River City Brewery for a brew and then headed over to Heartland Cycles for the Bendix Automatic Clinic put on by Byron of Heartland Bicycle and Bob of Harley's Bicycles in Hutchinson. A dozen of us watched as Bob tore apart both a Yellow and a Red band automatic hub, explaining the inner workings of each and the causes and fixes of the most common problems with these hubs. It was both an informative and entertaining clinic. Being the bike geeks we are we bombarded Bob with all kinds of questions relating to the bicycle industry which he gladly answered.
Big thanks to both Byron and Bob and Larry for setting this up for us.
Please check out both Heartland Bicycle and Harley's Bicycles. Harley's bicycles is one of the oldest if not the oldest bicycle shop in the state of Kansas.

The date has been set for 6th annual Art Of The Bicycle. Mark your calendar for Final Friday, July 30th.
This year's show will be a little different than previous years. The show will run longer than just the one night as it has in the past. There will be other bicycle related events during the time period that the show will run. Fewer bikes will be shown inside the gallery than in the past few years with an emphasis on artistic, creative and unusual. More details to come at a later date. In the meantime get busy creating that new work of art be it a bicycle, painting, photograph or what ever method of bicycle related artistic expression you choose.

A police chase early Saturday morning came to an abrupt end inside Tom Sawyer Bicycle Shop at the corner of Broadway and Mt Vernon. The building suffered some damage but they were still open for business via the back door.

Winter is not only a tough time for those of us who like to ride bikes but also on those who make a living repairing and selling them. Like all bike shops Tom Sawyer Bicycle Shop is in the middle of the slow season. Unfortunately for them during last year's peak season they had months of construction at their intersection of Broadway & Mt Vernon that no doubt deterred or detoured business. Bike shops generally depend on the good seasons to get them through the bad.
This time of year is always a good time to have your lbs (local bike shop) tune up your bike(s), have wheels built, hubs repaired etc... The bike shops need the business and you're probably not riding much anyway. You could even have them sell you a new bike in anticipation of Spring!

Despite the cloudy, cold and windy morning a good number of people showed up to ride in the parade. We were rewarded with a sunny not-so-cold afternoon. After the parade we hit a couple of pubs starting with the Shamrock where they were serving a great, free stew. Thanks to all who participated, the Shamrock and my Mother for snapping some photos. Bendix Automatic Clinic Thursday, February 25th 8:00pm at Heartland Cycle 111 N Mosley.
Bob, a veteran bicycle mechanic, will be showing how to repair and rebuild the classic two speed "kick back" hub. Both the shoe and disc models.
Bob began repairing bicycles at a young age and started working as a mechanic for Harley's Bicycles in Hutchinson when he was just 14.

Meet at the River City Brewery 150 North Mosley around 7:00pm for a beverage before or we'll just see you at Heartland at 8:00pm sharp.

Even if you have no interest in taking on a 2 speed hub, please come out anyway for a beer, to meet Bob, check out the Heartland shop and see your Thursday Night Pub Pedal buddies.

Bikes & Boy Scout Banquet

A few Coasters volunteered to display their bikes today as part of Boy Scout troop 726's Blue and Gold Banquet at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton church. Their theme was Cycling Through The Years, 100 Years of Scouting. There were 7 of us there showing 16 bikes. We had a good time and the boys seemed to really enjoy the bikes. Thanks Gina for inviting us and thanks to those who participated.

Peddlers 2010 Spring Bike Show and Swap

Sunday April 11th. Peddlers Bike Shop 139 East Lexington Ave, Independence Mo.
Starts at daybreak and ends when when the last person leaves usually around 3 or 4.
Vendors Fee is $10 for the swap.
Entry fee for bike show is $5 per bike.

First place trophies, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons.

Chapin Park Trails

Located at 3800 S. Hydraulic and sitting atop the former Chapin hog farm and landfill is the new Chapin Park. The park has multi-use trails (bike/walk) surfaced in crushed rock and singletrack dirt mountain bike trails. The trails meander over the grassy hilltop and down along the Arkansas river. The park also contains a dog park and model airplane field.

Several public works projects expected to be completed this year include West Street from Maple to Central; Oliver between Harry and Kellogg; Meridian from 31st South to 47th South; improvements to the 21st and Broadway intersection; and a new bike path along the I-135 corridor, from McAdams Park to Grove Park.

Man Attempts To Cross Frozen River On Bicycle

Intense moments for Hyatt Hotel employees who rushed into action to save a man's life in downtown Wichita Tuesday afternoon.

Hotel workers saw the man heading across the Arkansas River just north of where the bridge crosses the waterway at Waterman Street.

The man apparently thought the river was frozen over enough to allow him to ride his bicycle over it but instead he plunged through the ice.

The employees sprung into action. While one called security for help, others were rushing to help pull the man from the river. Thanks to their quick thinking they were able to rescue him from the freezing water using a life buoy.

Tony Johnson was one of the employees who rushed to the man's aide after pulling him from the water. "We just tried to get his blood moving so he could get up," Johnson says. Employees took the man into the hotel lobby to help get him warm.

Mike Piland says he and the other employees tried to work fast. "By the time he got close enough for us to throw a buoy to him he was getting tired, Piland says.

"He was alert and everything and didn't have any problem walking when we got him out so I think he just made a poor decision. He should have taken the bridge," Piland adds.

"It feels pretty good to save someone's life," Hyatt employee Chris Campbell says, "especially in ice like that in the winter time."

No word yet on the identity of the man or why he was trying to cross the river on a bike.

2008 Bikes For Tots Plaque

The Bikes For Tots campaign gave us this plaque for our 2008 contributions. It was also accompanied with a couple of nice thank you letters from Mr & Mrs Charles Williams (founders of Bikes For Tots) and the Salvation Army. These documents will go in the Coasters scrapbook. Thanks to Dan for picking this up as I never got around to it.

Delano And Bikes For Tots Parades

The plan was to ride in the Delano Christmas parade at noon and then the Bikes For Tots parade at 2:00pm. We got word that the BFT parade was postponed until 4:00pm so that gave us time to hang out in Delano after their parade which we did. I think there were 15 or so Coasters who braved the cold to participate with some really nicely decorated bikes.
Later we all met again for the BFT parade only to find out that it was canceled due to problems with the parade permit. So we all just drove to Club DebRicks instead of riding where we celebrated the accomplishments of the Bikes For Tots campaign with beverages and great food like the burgers from the Rolling Smoke bicycle BBQ trailer and all kinds of chili from Club DebRicks. Due to the donations and efforts of all involved over 170 new bikes will be given to area kids this Christmas. The Coasters donating 3 of those bikes after raising a total of $268.
What a great way to spend a Saturday!
