Bicycle Bob In Critical Condition After Accident

From what I have read Robert Hughes (aka Bicycle Bob) was riding his bike early Saturday morning on East Central when he was struck by a truck. The truck fled the the scene. The owner of the truck was later found and arrested. Mr Huges is in critical condition and being treated at Wesley Medical Center.

Julyapalooza is an event being put on by the Midwest Historical and Genealogical Society on Saturday, July 10th from 11:00am to 3:00pm at 1203 N. Main (right on the Midtown bike path). We've been asked to display our vintage bicycles along side vintage cars and motorcycles. There will also be a genealogy book and materials sale, tours of their library, a hot dog vendor and hourly drawings.
This event is for antique bikes only. I need to know in advance if you are participating. Only bikes that are 60s vintage or older, restored, original (or as close to original that the general public wouldn't know the difference). The bikes will be displayed outside and yes it will probably be hot. I'll provide shade and cold drinks. You may also just drop your bike(s) off and go hide somewhere cool. We do need a couple people to stay and answer questions. This event will give us a chance to spread bicycle love to a new audience, presumably those interested in history.

Let me know if you would like to participate and I'll fill you in on the details.

Last night was our 4th annual 20 Inch Night at the Thursday Night Pub Pedal. Our biggest turn out to date. I estimate 40 plus small wheeled bikes. Mostly muscle bikes, a few lowriders, a couple of 26" frames sporting 20" wheels, one 20" wheeled burrito and the donk which was a really small frame with 26" wheels.

First Mayor's Family Bike Day

Wichita's first Mayor's Family Bike Day took place today in Central Riverside park and was a fun time. Several bike rides, drawings for bicycles and accessories, a obstacle course, paper boy throw, maintenance clinics, the Coasters custom and classic bicycle display and more.

Thanks to the Mayor, the WPD, Bicycle Exchange, Tom Sawyer Bicycle Shop, L&M Cycling & Fitness, the Bike/Walk Alliance Wichita, the Bike Cave, the Health and Wellness Coalition of Wichita and all the volunteers who helped to put this event on. Thanks to all the Coasters who participated and to Dave for bringing the banner.

City Council Approves Bike Ordinance Changes

Today the Wichita city council approved changes to the current bicycle ordinance.
Unless there is a usable bicycle path next to the street, cyclists can now ride in the streeet no longer having to be within 5 feet of the curb. Eliminated from the ordinance was being required to license a bicycle and use a bike rack if one is available within a city block.

Tandem Night IV A Record Breaking Evening

A record breaking 15 tandems showed up at the Shamrock for last nights 4th annual Tandem Night at the Thursday Night Pub Pedal. Vintage 26 inch rear steers, home-built 20 inch rear steers and everything in between like a vintage 26 inch home-built rear steer. From the Shamrock we rode to the Arena where we picked up some Brooks & Dunn swag. From there to the fountains and then the Blue Lounge.

Ride 'Round Town 2010

The first Ride 'Round Town was great fun! Starting from Tom Sawyer Bicycle Shop we took a casual cruise around the South Central part of Wichita stopping along the way to tour a late 1800s home, the beautiful old Grace Methodist Church and a 1953 fire station turned home. The ride ended back at Tom Sawyer Bicycle where we enjoyed hot dogs, drinks and prizes.
At our second stop I counted 70 bicycles. I heard of someone else counting at least 80 at one point.

Thanks to Tom Sawyer Bicycle, Mr. Larry, the Health and Wellness Coalition of Wichita and especially those who opened up and welcomed us in to their homes and buildings.

Bicycle Ordinance Public Comment Session

From the Community Affairs Lieutenant with the Wichita Police Department...

We have scheduled a public comment session regarding the proposed bicycle ordinance revisions and amendments and I wanted to let you know about it. It is scheduled for Tuesday, May 18, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Water Center, 101 W. Pawnee. Representatives from the Planning, Law and Police Departments will be there to answer questions and take comments regarding the proposed revisions.

Sometime later this week the proposed ordinances and current state law will be noted on the front page of the WPD’s web site at www.wichitapolice.com along with a notice regarding the public comment session.

Participation was pretty good for the first ever Anti-Tweed Ride last night at the Pub Pedal. Tuxedo t-shirt, suits, gowns, dresses and fur. A variety of non tweed formal attire was worn. The men looked dashing and the women stunning. The wind made riding interesting especially for the women in dresses and may also have been the reason there wasn't a larger turn out. Someone looked up the weather and if I recall correctly the wind was 35-40mph with gusts up to 60mph!

The First Midwest Bicycle Swap

The first ever Midwest Bicycle Swap was held today at the Hometown market in Haysville. A large turnout of both buyers and sellers. The swap area filled up early and bikes and parts continued to show up through out the day. Lots of stuff traded hands. Things wound down around 1:30pm at about the same time the wind became unbearable.
Thanks to Grillmaster Mitch for putting this on, Accent Mobile Music for providing the sound and The Central States Metal Artisans for opening the Blacksmith Shop.
