Coffee Outside

I recently decided to do the Coffee Outside thing on some of my rides. Doing it cheaply was my main goal.

After watching several videos on different alcohol stove designs I decided on what seemed the simplest and made mine from an aluminum beer bottle.

I bought a little stainless pot at Walmart for about $5.

For my pour-over set-up I cut off the top of a Gatorade bottle to make a funnel. Since these photos were taken I’ve put the lid back on with a couple of holes drilled in it so the coffee steeps a little longer. I use the standard coffee filters which we already have at home.

For a windscreen I first used aluminum foil and later epoxied together a few pieces cut from cans.

Not being a real coffee geek I’m fine using the same pre-ground cheap coffee that we use in our automatic drip maker at home.

If I continue to do this I’m sure I will tweak and refine my system.

    1. Yes half the enjoyment for me is making the stuff and doing it on the cheap. Looking forward to doing it in cooler weather. Thanks for the comment!

  1. Great to see you are doing the Coffee Without Walls option this year. I’m planning to do it also, but with more conventional stove set up. I love how you think Randy, regarding the challenge of creating your own low cost alternatives. For what it’s worth, I bought a similar (or is it the same?) stainless mug/pot, but at top dollar in an outdoor store. I need to get back to Walmart again…

    1. Thanks Annie. I’m not actually participating in the coffeeneuring challenge but I do plan on doing more of the “coffee outside” or “coffee without walls” once back home. We’re currently traveling and riding trails.
