Steamboat Trace – Nebraska

After our ride on the Katy trail in Missouri we headed up to Nebraska and Nebraska City where we rode the near-by Steamboat Trace rail-to-trail. We rode it out and back for a total of 47 miles. This trail has a nice mix of trees, farmland and the Missouri river, similar to the Katy.
We started at the Arbor Station Trailhead and rode to the trails end just outside of Brownville. The trail is in mostly good condition but at the southern end could use some repair. There are even signs warning you about it”s roughness which are crevices caused by rains. Other than the rough sections the trail was really nice and we encountered a couple of people performing maintenance along the way.
On our return ride we stopped at Zachs in Peru for a beer and had a nice chat with our hostess. A neat feature on the trail are the Roland Sherman carvings. More on those here.
While checking out the paddle boat near Brownville I realized we”d been there before. Years ago we were in Iowa riding trails. After riding the Wabash Trace we went for a sight-seeing drive and ended up at the river and the boat.
We crossed paths with only 3 other riders. One on the trail and couple in Brownville. Both parties appeared to be traveling.
